Awesome Wuxia Dramas from 2017

Hi T-Shirt Lovers,

we all love martial arts, especially Chinese over-the-top spectacular wire-fu. And in which other genres can you find romance, drama, historical settings, and kung fu super-powers at the same time? Only in Wuxia of course. I’m not gonna get into too much detail on what Wuxia actually is this time. If you want to learn about the genre (hint: it’s a great vessel to learn more about Chinese culture in general) you should check out this video:

So with no further delay here are our top 5 wuxia dramas in 2017. If you don’t speak Chinese, there is an active translation community out there who releases subbed versions of Japanese, Korean and Chinese dramas on a regular basis, just search a bit for couple forums or streaming sites and you should find something cool pretty quick.

Your Highness 拜见宫主大人

The main protagonist is Qin Zhan, an avid player of a popular online game called New Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils (it’s both an actual game in China and a well-loved classic wuxia). Qin Zhan time travels into the game that he’s been playing for ten years and gains incredible powers as a result. However, he also becomes the number one enemy of the entire martial arts world and must face the dangers and conspiracies that are thrown in his way. This webdrama is just pure silly fun.

The King’s Woman 丽姬传

Gongsun Li is the granddaughter and disciple of military commander Gongsun Yu. When she was young, she met and rescued Ying Zheng, who then fell in love with her at first sight. When the Qin troops were attacked, Gongsun Li’s childhood lover, Jing Ke was poisoned while protecting her. In order to attain the antidote for Jing Ke, Gongsun Li agreed to marry Ying Zheng. A lot of tragic romance, combined with betrayal and war!

Tribes and Empires: Storm of Prophecy 九州·海上牧云记

The series is set in the fictional world of Novoland and tells the story of loyalty, friendship, enmity and romance between the young descendants during the twilight years of the Duan Dynasty. High production values like Game of Thrones…oh yeah, bring it on!

Fighter of the Destiny 择天记

Changsheng is plagued with an incurable illness, fated not to live past the age of twenty. To find a cure, he leaves his temple to find the magical stone that will change his fate. Bringing a piece of a marriage vow with him, he sets out to Shendu Province, thus beginning a journey of a rising hero going against the world. Pure wuxia at it’s best here.

Wu Xin: The Monster Killer 无心法师

Wu Xin is a wandering immortal who lives a hungry and penniless life. He has no recollection of how long he has lived or how he came to be, but he has powers where he can sense the presence and communicate with spirits good and evil that still roam the world of the living. A mix of horror, historical drama and fantasy here.
